A Level Further Maths

 

AS Level

 

In Year 12 the three modules are Further Pure 1, Statistics 2 and Decision Mathematics.

 

Further Pure 1 includes 

Complex numbers, Numerical methods, Coordinate systems, Matrix algebra, series and proof.

 

Statistics 2 includes                 

Binomial and Poisson distributions, Continuous random variables, Continuous distributions and Hypothesis testing.

 

Decision Maths includes

Algorithms, the Route inspection problem, Critical Path analysis, Linear programming and Matchings.

 

Assessment:

The exam board we use is Edexcel.

There is no coursework.

All modules have 1½ hour exams, all taken in June.

 

Entry requirements: students must have a grade B or better on the Higher GCSE course, although a grade A or A* is preferable.

This course is for those who found GCSE Mathematics very easy and who want to challenge themselves mathematically.

 

A2

 

In Year 13 the modules are Further Pure 2 and 3 and Mechanics 2.

 

Further Pure 2 includes

Inequalities, Complex numbers, Differential equations, Maclaurin and Taylor series and polar coordinates.

 

Further Pure 3 includes

Hyperbolic functions, Coordinate systems, Integration, Vectors and Matrix algebra

 

Mechanics 2 includes

Kinematics, Centres of mass, Work and energy, Collisions and Statics of rigid bodies.

 

 

 

 

Assessment:

There is no coursework.

All modules have 1½ hour exams, all taken in June.

 

Progression

Further Mathematics is recommended for anyone who wants to take a Mathematics degree, or a mathematics related degree such as Engineering or Science, at University. University admissions tutors are more frequently looking for Further Maths AS or A level to help them distinguish between candidates.
