BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science

 

As with all BTECs, this course is assessed continually by laboratory assignments, case studies and projects. It is designed for students with an interest in using scientific skills in the world of work. The course covers a wide range of scientific applications which can include medical and forensic units. It can be studied alongside other BTECs or A levels. There will be links with medical/ local industry/police/fire service etc. wherever possible.

 

What qualification will I get?

The full two year course is the equivalent to 2 A levels but there may be the flexibility to obtain the BTEC National Certificate (equivalent to 1 AS) or the BTEC National Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to 1 A level) by reducing the number of units covered.

 

 

Units

The course is made up of six compulsory units as well as some optional ones. The following gives an idea of some of these:

 

Compulsory units include

  • Fundamentals of science
  • Working in the Science Industry
  • Scientific Practical Techniques

 

 

Some optional units which may be available include

  • Forensic Photography
  • Traffic accident investigation
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Diseases and Infections
  • Mathematical calculations for Science

 

 

 

 

 

What qualifications will I need to get on the course?

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including Science, Maths and English will be required. Because the course is based on continual assessment it is vital that you attend regularly and are prepared to work hard in and out of school so a real interest in the subject matter will be required as well.

 

Progression

The course will allow learners to move into a wide range of work areas or further/higher education courses including degree courses, laboratory technician work, nursing, the police force and forensic pathology to name but a few.
