Ryton Parents – Year 9 Options – Child Development

 

The Home Economics Child Development course is concerned with students studying and developing competencies in comprehension, analysis, investigation, problem-solving, communication and evaluation.

The syllabus focuses on the development of children from conception to the age of five.

 

Students will study:

Parenthood – the family, planning for a family, preparing for the baby and provision of a safe environment.

Pregnancy – reproduction, pre-conceptual care, pregnancy, preparation for the birth, labour and birth, newborn baby, postnatal care.

Diet, health and care of the child – A healthy diet, feeding a baby, weaning, feeding the young child, food related problems, child care and health

Development of the child – physical, social, emotional, intellectual development, learning and play.

Support for the parent and child – types of support available, child care provision, educational and developmental provision

 

Assessment

The scheme of assessment consists of two components:

 

a)         External Examination                                          40%

b)         Coursework                                                       60%

 

The external examination will consist of one written examination paper.

Coursework

The coursework element is in two parts a Research task and a Child Study. 

 

The research task is worth 20% of the final marks.  Students will complete three research tasks over the two year course and the best mark will be submitted for assessment.

The Child Study will involve research/investigation and observational visits of a child between 0-5 years.  This will involve four visits over a period of four months.  This is worth 40% of the final mark.
