Whilst the safety and welfare
of pupils in school has always been a priority, recent changes in the law and
in the expectations of school inspection have placed an ever increasing
importance on this aspect of school life.
The Leadership and Governors
of the school have welcomed this increased emphasis and embraced the principles
of safeguarding not simply in words or policies, but in concrete actions.
This commitment is reflected
by the fact that the required position of Designated Teacher for safeguarding
is a member of the senior Leadership team. We believe this gives greater access
for pupils to discuss what can sometimes be difficult and emotional matters.
However, safeguarding today is
much wider than “child protection”. It
covers every aspect of school life from the proper appointment of staff to
health and safety and the safe use of IT.
All members of staff are
required to be familiar with the contents of the safeguarding procedures and to
be proactive with regard to ensuring the safety and welfare of all pupils.
